WRITTEN RESPONSE:
TRANSLATING: Duck and Cover (Film 1952)
Video made with different voices and positions. Translate the seriousness of the Atomic Bomb with both real miserable conditions and fake optimism, the actual images and clips of Hiroshima people flashed in between American movies and news to show the hidden truth.
As a cheap and fast way of distributing messages, Leaflets were widely used during that time. US Government was sending survival guides and defense leaflets to their citizens while feeling the threat from Russia. However, they also used leaflets to threaten Hiroshima people before they threw the atomic bomb. The front pages of this leaflet are optimistic instructions in Burt the Turtle, and the last page is a parallel of both US’s threatening words to Hiroshima and text to their citizens. At last, viewers can reveal the survivors’ testimonies to uncover the different voices about Atomic force.
ClASS FEEDBACKS：
– Working: Video and leaflet are both Powerful. Both bring different voices and a sense of reality into it. The leaflets format and reading process. The use of content and images in leaflets. The juxtaposition of cartoon elements and serious contents.
– Not working: The paper in the mockup looks very old. Maybe it’s better not to use that extreme treatment. Should it look like something old or the nostalgia feeling?
– The leaflet’s texture is to make it have a historical feeling. It would be triable if adding some modern visual to create a more ironic feeling and drag the audience back to reality.
– The editing of instruction in the video to leaflet works well.
– The old feeling of the leaflet is looking good. However, need to make sure the text is obvious for the reader to look at.
– Want to know where all the images come from and the references, because now it is not very obvious. (such as the cover image)
