WRITTEN RESPONSE:

The environmental crisis is no longer a new word for our society, and its impacts keep intensifying in every corner of the world. But talking and raising awareness of severe issues is more challenging nowadays in the crowded media space. Hence, dispelling the public’s misgiving about contributing mite may not influence the situation is crucial. With this in mind, our group explores how social activities open up conversation and further provide public strength in the form of participation and education.

The Knitted Joey Pouches perfectly represent how individuals and the community make an effort to help with the Australian Wildfire caused by the environmental crisis. That is to say, these handmade items are the general public’s immediate response. As one of the most popular domestic hand-making methods, our group explored how knitting acts as a flexible tool for creating objects in response to social and political needs throughout history. Knitting+ is a proposal for a series of workshops exploring knitting activities concerning environmental issues. With the flexible visual system designed based on the knit grid and system, we are able to swiftly generate different workshops in response to specific topics, such as the Australia Wildfire in this case. Furthermore, use knitting as a metaphor for gathering individuals’ strength to enlarge the scope of open conversation and discussion.
