WRITTEN RESPONSE:

Open, group, move, delete…

A computer folder is one of the common methods of storing documents and data. Moving the files into this virtual space allows us to store vast amounts of content without taking many physical areas. Throughout the invention and evolution of the computer interface, the mutual influence between the physical and digital worlds was constantly repeated.

To explore the relationship and transformation between real-life activities and digital interface, I use the folder as a site for examining objects and activities from the physical world (In this case, the browsing of a refrigerator). Utilizing the limited functions of the folder, I dissect and arrange things, just like how people do cleaning and organizing in real life, and change the visual layout to augment the detail of the folder’s visual qualities. Therefore, the step-by-step process exploration reveals the parallel between the digital interface and the actual physical world and, at the same time, utilizes exclusive digital functions to show their dissimilarities.

CLASS FEEDBACKS:

-More focus on movements and different ways in this week’s folder iteration.
-Clear development in the use of folders. The idea of dissection and combining ingredients in the folder is nice.
– Last week physical form made interaction of project more apparent, new iterations could benefit from print publication as well.
-Can connect more on the reference “all media are extensions of the human faculty.” Use this reference as a lens to talk about what you are doing in your publication. You are using the folder interface as a “cooking space” and an extension of the human faculty.
-The publication now is not finished as something explaining the cooking process. Maybe create more like a narrative.
-There are too many references, need to connect project to references more clearly
-It is interesting that when some of the cuts start to look not what they are, cause they lose resolution and visual quality when they are processed in digital media. A bit like a shorthand.
-Could be useful to create gif or animation to represent real-life interaction with more ingredients and sounds.
-Inherent humor in the project, could play more with poking fun at medium as a cooking surface, a paraphrase. Explore the extent to which you can “cook” in this “space.”
-Play more with the inaccuracy and limitation of the interface.
-Maybe create a sharing archive for viewers to play with data and add things on their own.
